What Your Pinterest Board Might Be Telling You (Without You Realising)

We all do it, a moment of calm on the sofa, a glass of wine in hand, and suddenly you're ten pins deep in interiors you love but don’t quite know how to translate into your own space. Whether it’s muted palettes, layered textures, or rooms soaked in natural light, your saved pins are more than just pretty pictures, they’re a quiet collection of clues about what you’re drawn to and how you want to feel in your home.
"Your Pinterest board is already telling a story, you just haven’t read it yet."
– Maché Interiors
At Maché Interiors, we often ask clients to share their Pinterest boards during the early stages of a project, not just to get a visual read, but to help us uncover the common threads that run through their inspiration. It’s surprising how often someone will say, “I never noticed how much soft green I’ve pinned,” or “I thought I wanted colour, but everything I love is neutral and natural.” Your board, whether curated or chaotic, is a window into your subconscious aesthetic and it can be used as a springboard to create a home you will love.
So, what can your Pinterest really tell you?
1. You Might Be More Consistent Than You Think
While you may feel like your board is a mix of everything, coastal kitchens next to moody reading nooks, often, there’s a consistent thread in texture, shape or tone. Look again: are most of the rooms relaxed and open, or warm and cocooned? Are there repeating colours? You may have an unspoken preference for clean lines, natural materials, or symmetry and that’s a powerful thing to spot before you commit to design decisions.

2. It Reveals How You Want to Feel in a Space
Mood is often more important than style. Are the spaces you’re saving airy, serene and minimal? Or layered, cosy and full of character? That emotional cue of calm vs. energised, minimalist vs. expressive can help shape everything from your lighting choices to your layout.
3. It Might Be Pointing You to a Signature Material or Detail

You might not realise how often you pin aged brass, fluted wood, boucle fabric or checkerboard floors. A Pinterest board can gently nudge you towards details you return to again and again, even if they seem small. Picking up on these cues can help create a cohesive scheme that feels deeply personal.
Ask yourself are my choices natural materials that have a link to nature? Or are my choices glossy and sleek? These answers will help lead you to a design direction you will love.
Not sure where to start? Condense it down!
Try pinning 10 images that you truly love, then look for overlap in:
Colour tones
Light levels (bright and airy vs moody and grounded)
Texture (polished vs raw, layered vs minimal)
Material choices
Note down any consistent themes, I promise there will be some!
Once you have pinpointed some consistent themes make some boards that explore those areas. This will help you delve into what elements you like within that style and what you don’t feel as connected with.
Organise Your Board Into Micro-Themes:
Colour palettes
Room types (kitchens, bedrooms, etc.)
Details (lighting, joinery, fabrics)
Style leaves clues and your pins are the map. Even if your board feels like a mix of ideas, there’s always a thread running through it. Whether it’s a colour you keep returning to, a material that shows up again and again, or a certain mood that lingers in each image, your inspiration is already guiding the way. Give it a go and let us know what you find!
