The school holidays are behind us, the days are getting shorter, and suddenly… the house feels ready for a reset.

September is the perfect time to get your home back in order after the chaos of summer and to prepare it for the months ahead. Whether that means making it feel more cosy and calm, or finally tackling those lingering design projects before guests arrive for the festive season.

At Maché Interiors, we think of September as the autumn version of a spring clean, a chance to refresh, reorganise, and re-style your home with intention. Not just for how it looks, but for how it feels to live in.

Here’s why this month is such a sweet spot for design work and what to consider doing now so you can enjoy the results all winter long.

Start Now, Be Ready by Christmas

Design work takes time. Whether it’s sourcing furniture, booking contractors, or simply finalising decisions, September offers a crucial head start. Begin now, and your home will be beautifully finished in time for hosting duties, cosy evenings, and those moments when you want to feel proud of the space you live in.

Even if it’s just one room, a playroom that’s never quite worked, a guest bedroom that needs warming up, or a hallway that doesn’t make the right first impression, starting in September means no stress when December rolls around.

Embrace the Seasonal Shift

As the light fades earlier and the days draw in, our homes start to work harder for us becoming not just the place we live, but where we seek comfort, connection, and calm. September is the perfect moment to begin layering in warmth, softness and atmosphere to help your space feel in sync with the season.

Here’s are some simple updates:

1. Textural changes: Switch out summer linens and lighter fabrics for more tactile, comforting layers, think velvet cushions, boucle covers, thick wool throws and soft rugs underfoot. These elements don’t just look luxurious; they create a sense of cocooning that makes home feel like a true sanctuary.

2. Mood lighting: The key to autumn interiors is lighting that can shift with your mood. Add floor and table lamps to soften your space in the evenings and balance any stark overhead lighting. Look for warm toned bulbs, layered light sources, and maybe even a candle or two for added cosiness. A dimmer switch goes a long way this time of year.

3. Seasonal colour refresh: Introduce richer tones like olive green, rust, aubergine, chocolate brown or burnt orange, even in small touches like cushions, ceramics or art. These colours echo nature’s shift outside and help your interiors feel considered and grounded. You don’t need to repaint a room to embrace autumn, even a few tonal accents can make a big impact.

4. Re-style your key zones: Make small styling updates to the places you see and use most, coffee tables, consoles, kitchen shelves, hallway benches. Swap fresh flowers for dried flowers or branches, layer in ceramic vases or rustic woods, and let go of anything that feels too ‘light and breezy’ for the season ahead.

5. Prep for the cold-weather rhythm: This is also a great time to think practically:

  • Do you need more storage for coats and boots?

  • Would a bench or sideboard near the door make coming home feel calmer?

  • Is your guest bedroom (or home office!) ready for colder mornings and extra visitors?

September naturally brings a return to routine. With children back at school and summer travel behind us, this is often the first chance in months that we have had the headspace to think about our homes again and do something about it.
