We'll delve into the secrets of creating spaces that are anything but bland.

In previous blogs we've explored using colour in home design; but whether you are a fan of minimalist interiors or prefer to go with maximalist patterns, there is no denying that neutral schemes require thought and balance. The key to creating a great neutral space lies in layering textures, fabrics, and shades to make the room rich and full of visual interest.

Plot out your colour scheme

Firstly, even if you are layering creams and whites on top of one another, it is always a good idea to add in a variety of different textures and materials. Use different shades, intensities, and darker and lighter shades of the same colour. This will add depth and interest to your space. Warm wood tones, rich metal finishes, and surface materials with depth, are key to creating a neutral scheme with subtle variation.

Tip - Get ordering samples from flooring, fabrics and wall finishes and put them out across your table. Once you have everything, take a picture. If it looks varied, balanced, and interesting it will likely look great when transferred to your room.

It’s all about the base

The best way to make a neutral scheme feel warm and inviting is by picking a neutral base colour that works with the rooms natural lighting. The orientation of the room is a big consideration and the amount and direction of light entering a room can completely alter the appearance of the colour.

  • South facing rooms tend to experience warmer light, so colours can often appear more yellow.

  • Colours in North facing rooms tend to appear consistently flatter and cooler and tend to lean greyer.  This is important to consider when picking the undertone of your neutral shade.

  • West/east facing rooms are not as dark or flat as a north facing. But if this space is going to be used for long periods of time, then you are best to stick with warm, pale colours to make it feel as light as possible.

Take it to the floor

Flooring serves as a crucial element in enhancing the appeal of a neutral scheme. Opting for a premium flooring material like oak with an interesting wood grain or intricate patterns in tiles, will add depth and richness to the area.

Once you have picked your flooring material, remember to take your paint sample along to the wood/tile/carpet showroom and see how the shades look against each other. You want your flooring to have enough contrast to allow visual interest, but it is always a good idea to have the base tone of your wall colour reflected in your flooring.

Create your focal point

When designing a neutral space, it’s important to decide on where and what you want your focal point to be. Every room needs a focal point to feel inviting and comfortable, and without one the room can feel confusing and jumbled as everything shouts for your attention. A bold, eye-catching sofa or an intricately designed coffee table can serve as a focal point amidst the neutral tones. Introducing artwork with a pop of colour can also add contrast to a neutral scheme and make the whole space feel more interesting.

Layered Lighting

Lighting also plays a crucial role in any interior design project, and in a neutral space, it can make or break the ambiance. Create layers of lighting with a mix of overhead fixtures, table lamps, and floor lights. Consider pendant lights to give a room a focal point or draw attention to a specific area within an open plan space.

Designing a layered and textured neutral interior is a nuanced process that requires a delicate balance of elements. By incorporating various textures, layering furniture and accessories, and introducing statement pieces, you can create a space that is both calming and visually interesting.
